Good news for chocoholics

Eating a bar of chocolate a week could help prevent strokes!! The Canadian scientists looked at the diets of 50,000 people and found that those who ate chocolate were almost a quarter (22%) less likely to suffer a stroke than the non-chocolate eaters.
Chocolate’s contained flavonoid, antioxidants which have been shown in a number of studies to have heart-protective effects. It seems that good quality chocolate, lower in sugar and higher in cocoa solids, can offer some protection to your heart as well as putting a smile on your face.

Keeping Healthy During Ramadhan

The vision of Islam in all issues is moderation, including eating. Ramadhan is all about cleansing, physically and mentally. However, most people still follow the old habits on excessive eating even though they are aware of the harm to the body and mind.

There are a lot of reading materials popping out during Ramadhan in the media and all are giving the same advice, “eat this, eat that”, “do not eat this, and do not eat that”. Our normal response would be “Oh, I already know that” or “I’ll eat whatever I like now but I’ll be on a strict diet after Ramadhan” or “after Ramadhan I’ll sign up a slimming session at …”. We are just human!! It is not easy to change especially when it comes to eating habits. Who can resist the temptation of foods during Ramadhan?

So let’s eat then during Ramadhan, but the correct ways!! First of all lets try to understand about our body. When we are fasting during the day, our blood sugar level is decreasing. If you are working and having activities during the day, the level will be much lower. At this stage, the brain is saying to your body “emergency situation, starvation!!” That’s why during Ramadhan we have the cravings for foods. We are going nuts with foods!! During the last few minutes before Iftar, our temptation to eat is very strong. Those are the symptoms of starvation and our response is normal and we cannot control this. Thank god!!

But what can I do?? The nutritionists said don’t stuff your self it’s not healthy!!
The answer is easy! Boost your blood glucose level to curb the starvation symptoms.
Traditionally, we start our Iftar with dates and a glass of water/milk. This practice began with the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He would break his fast with dates. There are many hadiths in which Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encourages Muslims to eat dates. Following our Prophet Mohammad (SAW) habit is the correct way to start our Iftar and to replenish our blood glucose level. You can also have warm fruit juices and other fresh and dried fruits to complement the starting of your Iftar. It is advisable to wait for at least half an hour before you eat your main Iftar meal. It is a good practice if you could do your Magrib prayer during this break. It is a guarantee that you will not perform your Magrib prayer with a heavy stomach.

Once your blood glucose is replenished you would get rid of the cravings and you could control easily on the amount of food that you eat. Most important you could think rationally. Go ahead eat whatever you like for your main Iftar meal but remember in moderation. If you still have problems in controlling yourself, try having a glass of water mix with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar just before you eat your main Iftar meal. Go ahead have some snacks after your Terawih prayer and enjoy yourself with a warm cup of tea.

I have played around with this theory with my family during this holy month of Ramadhan. There was one day where I really follow my cravings and cooked as many choices of foods as I could. We then started our Iftar with heavy and deep fried foods. We kept on eating and eating. I can never stop eating because the cravings did not go. I was so surprised I have rooms in my stomach to eat. We end up stuffing ourselves and could hardly move. It was so hard to perform the Magrib prayer afterwards. If I keep on practicing this habit during Ramadhan, I will end up after 30 days of fasting adding 10kg to my weight; increasing the storage of fat cells, free-radicals and toxins in my body and increasing my chances of getting sick. Let us not forget the health benefits of fasting in the first place!!!

Anti-Oxidants Vs Anti-Inflammatory Agents

Simple version of my explanation:

Various naturally processes in our body produced free-radicals, i.e chemicals that can cause chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer diseases, etc etc. Research so far found that anti-oxidants are the scavenger of free-radicals inside our body. So anti-oxidants are the good chemicals that can help fight all the diseases mentioned above.

Vitamins such as Vitamin C, Carotenes and Vitamin E are anti-oxidants. Chemicals that are found naturally in certain food are also potent anti-oxidants.
Food that are rich in anti-oxidants are such as;
- berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries)
- broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, carrots (more when cooked)
- tomatoes especially when cooked in oil.
- red grapes (this is why research said red wine has health benefits)
- garlic (maybe why vampires are scared of it - just a joke ok)
- spinach (Popeye is right to advise us taking spinach)
- soy
- tea (especially green tea)

When we injured ourselves we can see the redness and swelling on our body. This is just a way our body's response to physical injury and begins its repair process. This process is called inflammation. Inflammation also occurs inside our body and we cannot see it. Over period of time can caused the chronic diseases. A simple blood test can measure the chemical marker for inflammation, a protein called C-reactive protein (CRP). If your CRP level is below 5 milligrams per liter of blood, then no need to worry.

From the food that we eat we will get both the naturally occurring good and bad chemicals. Inflammatory chemicals promote inflammation reaction inside our body. Whereas anti-inflammatory chemicals prevent the inflammation process. So selecting food that contain anti-inflammatory agents benefit us. Also avoid consuming too much of food that promotes inflammation like fast food, junk food and food contain arachidonic acid.

Food that are rich in anti-inflammatory agents are such as;
- rich in omega 3s: salmon, anchovies, mackerel, sardine, tuna, herring, free-range or grass feed chicken and beef.
- rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids: olive oil (go for extra virgin because least proceed)
- dark green vegetables such as lettuce and spinach
- cherries, blueberries
- broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts
- turmeric, ginger and garlic (Asian practice of cooking with turmeric, ginger and garlic definitely a protection)
- Sea kelp and seaweed
- Shitake mushroom, enoki mushroom, oyster mushroom (healthy and yet yum yum)
- papaya, pineapple (yummy fruit salad)
- sweet potato, yam
- herbs: holy basil, rosemary, oregano, Chinese Goldthread, Hu Zhang, Baikal Skullcap
- tea (of course green tea)

Anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents from our food not only keep us away from the chronic diseases but also can slow aging process. So take your pick from the above list and start adding in your daily meals. Lets eat!!! yummy yummy.......

Anti-oxidant vs Anti-inflammatory agents: The Malaysian herbal remedies

My late grandmother was a masseur and she made herbal remedies especially for ladies. She has no medical qualifications and no scientific knowledge. How did she know about the health benefits of the herbs that she was using in her remedies? Definitely she could not have known from Google search because in her time there was no such thing. And the remedies worked and the ladies were booking in advanced.

In my culture, after a woman gave birth the confinement period is 44 days. I was not allowed to go out. I was being wrapped daily from head to toe with herbal mix and I was being massaged daily with sea cucumber (gamat) ointment. I can only eat rice with stir-fry vegetables with chopped ginger and soup (chicken and meat) with garlic/ginger/cardamons/cloves/ground pepper. I can only drink plain water, hot milk or milo, gotu kola (pegaga) drink with honey and last but not least my grandmother's powerful herbal drink (air periuk) that I had to force myself from swallowing because of extreme bitter taste.

I was not a believer at that time, instead of finishing the 44 days.......i cheated my way and managed to do only for 14 days.

If I could turn back the clock, I would have completed the 44 days. I am a believer now. What my grandmother was preaching was true. She said all the herbs that she used had their own benefits to the body. The herbal mix, ointment, herbal drinks and the strict diet were to boost recovery of the uterus and other parts of the body from injury and inflammation.

The Malaysian called it pegaga, some called it gotu kola or Indian pennywort. It is rich in iron, vitamin K, vitamin C, anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. Pegaga is now well known for its benefits. It improves the blood circulation, alleviates fatigue, delays aging, improves immune system, helps recovery from blood vessel inflammation, helps recovery from injuries, etc etc.

The ointment that I was using was from the extract of sea cucumber (gamat) which nowadays scientifically proven has medical properties such as anti-inflammation and helps in wound healing.

Of course garlic and ginger both contain anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. As for cardamons and cloves, they both have the antiseptic properties.

I wish I had put more effort and learn about my grandmother's secret recipe for her herbal remedies. Until now I have no idea what were the rest of the herbs and spices she used.
So believe it or not, our ancestors had the health formula. Pity we took them for granted.

To the younger Malaysian ladies, our ancestor's anti-aging and beauty tips are way better than the one you get from the pharmacy.

Stevia Facts!!!

Stevia is the gift of Paraguay to the world. Discovered in the 18th Century by Swiss scientist Moises Bertoni, who lived and worked in Paraguay between 1884-1929. However, the native Paraguayans knew and used Stevia leaves for centuries. Today, there is a great interest in Stevia, as it is a 100% natural sweetener and several times more potent than traditional sugar, with the added value that Stevia has almost 0% calorie content. The acceptance of Stevia by the rigorous markets in North America and Europe is set to revolutionize the natural sweetener and dieting product sector, as Stevia has been granted acceptance as a product with no adverse side effects on human health.
- Message of Ambassador of Paraguay in India, His Excellency Genaro Vicente Pappalardo to the Stevia Global Forum 2010 India.

Read on to learn more about this amazing herb, which originated abundantly in Paraguay and Brazil, but is now grown around the world.

1. About 30 times sweeter than sugar, dried stevia leaf contains no carbohydrates and so has no effect on the body’s insulin levels when ingested. Stevia has been shown to help equalize blood sugar levels raised by other sugars and starch consumed at the same time. Stevia, as you might expect, is quickly gaining popularity as a natural sugar substitute among those in pursuit of a leaner body. Improved digestion is another of stevia’s benefits. An excellent alternative to manufactured artificial sweeteners, stevia leaf is a whole food, just dried and ground into powder.
- Brendan Brazier, The Thrive Diet: The Whole Food Way to Lose Weight, Reduce Stress, and Stay Healthy for Life

2. Whole stevia leaf can be bought at health food stores or by mail order, or you can grow your own. Grind the whole leaf into a powder and add to food and teas for a sweet taste. You can also buy water-extracted stevia in liquid form from your local health food store in the supplements section. Avoid alcohol-extracted and refined forms of stevia. Unrefined stevia is dark green in color.
- Gabriel Cousens, There Is a Cure for Diabetes: The Tree of Life 21-Day+ Program

3. The natural stevia leaf also has been found to be nontoxic and has no mutagenic activity. Studies conflict as to the effect of stevia leaf on fertility. The majority of clinical studies show stevia leaf to have no effect on fertility in both males and females. In one study, however, a water extract of the leaf was shown to reduce testosterone levels and sperm count in male rats. Brazilian scientists recorded stevioside’s ability to lower systemic blood pressure in rats in 1991.
- Leslie Taylor, ND, The Healing Power of Rainforest Herbs: A Guide to Understanding and Using Herbal Medicinal

4. An excellent alternative to manufactured artificial sweeteners, stevia leaf is a whole food, just dried and ground into powder. Its ability to help regulate blood sugar levels is important for sustained energy. I even add stevia to my sport drink to improve its effectiveness.
- Brendan Brazier, The Thrive Diet: The Whole Food Way to Lose Weight, Reduce Stress, and Stay Healthy for Life

5. Stevia has been used as a natural sweetener for centuries in South America, especially by the Guarani Indians. Stevia is safe for those with Candida, helps control sugar cravings, and does not disrupt blood sugar levels. Its flavor comes on slower than that of sugar, and some say it has a licorice aftertaste. In Japan, stevia accounts for about 40 percent of the sweetener market.
- Brigitte Mars, A.H.G., The Desktop Guide to Herbal Medicine: The Ultimate Multidisciplinary Reference to the Amazing Realm of Healing Plants, in a Quick-study, One-stop Guide

6. STEVIA LEAF Latin: Stevia rebaudiana WHAT IT DOES: Stevia leaf is sweet in taste and neutral in action. It sweetens without adding calories. SAFETY ISSUES: Not known. Do not use in excess. [If you're using] drops or powder add to food and drink as a sweetener, to taste. Stevia leaf is a natural sweetener that comes from the rain forests in Paraguay and Brazil. Per weight gram, the purified white dried leaf extract of stevia is up to several hundred times as sweet as sugar-almost as sweet as saccharine.
- Alan Keith Tillotson, Ph.D., A.H.G., D.Ay., The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook: Everything You Need to Know About Chinese, Western, and Ayurvedic Herbal Treatments

7. Stevia is a herb that can be used as a powder extract or a liquid concentrate for varying levels of sweetness. Stevia may take a little getting used to, because sometimes it will have a slight aftertaste. Notably, stevia does not seem to trigger a rise in blood sugar and has become a popular alternative to artificial sweeteners.
- M.D. David Brownstein, The Guide to Healthy Eating

8. Unfortunately, stevia does produce an aftertaste that some find unpleasant. Preliminary studies in animal models show that stevia can lower blood glucose levels and blood pressure, two effects of prime importance in dealing with diabetes.
- Michael T. Murray, Beat Diabetes Naturally: The Best Foods, Herbs, Supplements, and Lifestyle Strategies to Optimize Your Diabetes Care

9. Technically, stevia is a dietary supplement because it has not been evaluated or approved by the FDA as a sweetener. Preliminary studies show that stevia may have blood sugar lowering and blood pressure lowering effects. It does exert a mild to unpleasant aftertaste.
- Michael T. Murray, Beat Diabetes Naturally: The Best Foods, Herbs, Supplements, and Lifestyle Strategies to Optimize Your Diabetes Care

10. It is almost calorie-free, does not promote tooth cavities since it cannot be ingested by most common bacteria, contains a nutritious array of vitamins and minerals, and has been noted to have benefits for diabetics and hypoglycemic. Stevia is approved as a food source in South and Central America, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and China, and as such, is used as a sweetener in many food products. However, in the United States and Canada, probably due in large part to concerns raised by the sugar industry about potential competition, to date, stevia is approved only as a food supplement.
- Ron Garner, Conscious Health: A Complete Guide to Wellness Through Natural Means

Important Note: If you purchase stevia, make certain that it is a pure product. Maltodextrin is sometimes added to the lower-priced stevia products, but maltodextrin and maltose are the two carbohydrates that have the highest glycemic index of all: 150.

How to Get Rid of Black Undereye Circles

Good tips that I found from eHow.com :)

Step 1
Get plenty of sleep. Don't short yourself on snooze time. Proper sleep is necessary for good overall health and a sharp mind as well as a glowing appearance.

Step 2
Eat healthy. Your diet can affect your appearance too. If you're not eating properly it will show in the way you look. It is important to eat a healthy balanced diet.

Step 3
Take a vitamin supplement if you suffer from an iron deficiency. If you've been known to skimp on meals a vitamin supplement can help ensure you get the vitamins and minerals you need.

Step 4
Use a concealer to help hide dark undereye circles. Make sure to blend well and let dry thoroughly. Then apply foundation, let dry and dust lightly with a coat of face powder.

Step 5
Apply cold tea bags or cucumber slices to the eyes to reduce puffiness.

Step 6
Limit intake of salt, caffeine and alcohol which can cause the body to retain fluid and contribute to eye puffiness.

Step 7
Draw attention away from undereye circles by applying makeup in a way that draws attention upward instead. You can do this by dabbing a bit of irridescent eyeshadow in shades such as white, gold or pink just beneath the brow bone. It also helps to use eyeliner only on the upper eyelids. Applying liner to the lower lids will only draw attention to undereye circles rather than away from them.

RAMADHAN FOODS

For the first few days of fasting it is normal that you feel the negative effects of fasting. It is tough especially during the first 3 days of fasting. So do not exert yourselves too much in your activities. Take it easy!!! Although our metabolism will slow down, but miraculously our body is amazing in keeping homeostasis. That's why after the first few days of fasting you will feel much better and you can continue fasting until end of Ramadhan with ease.

There is no right or wrong foods during Ramadhan. Ramadhan or not, you should be eating a healthy balanced diet, that is the intake of 60% Carbohydrate + 25% Protein + 15 % Fat +Vitamins + Minerals + Water.

However, fasting is cleansing your body so we should go for foods that assist in the process. It is recommended that we fuel the body with foods that have benefits and try to avoid or cut down on foods that will harm the body.

Fasting or not you should be taking multivitamins supplement. When shopping for multivitamins, go for the normal dosage. Do not go over limits by buying individual vitamins with high dosage. It is a danger to your liver and kidney.

It is best if you could increase the intake of food assisting in cleansing and cells recovery for your Iftar (berbuka puasa). Go for foods that are rich in anti-oxidants & anti inflammatory agents such as broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, red grapes, garlic, ginger, turmeric, carrots, soya bean curd, tomatoes, berries (strawberries, cherries, raspberries, blackberries), wholegrain choices, mushrooms (oyster, shitake, enoki, button), sweet potato, yam, sea-kelp (seaweed), olive oil, salmon, mackerel, sardin, tuna, herring, cat fish (ikan keli), free-range beef or chicken (grass fed), green lettuce, turmeric, ginger, fruits (apples, pears, mango, guava, papaya, pineapple, pomegranates, peach, nectarine), green tea, etc.

Limit your intake on foods that could harm the body such as deep-fried foods and shallow fried foods (regardless of the types of oil that you use), foods using coconut milk (santan) and ghee, lamb chop, steak with fat, fast food (McD, KFC, Burger King, etc), junk food (potato crisps, nachos, chocolate, candies, etc), soft drinks (including diet choices), coffee, seafood (prawns, crabs, mussels, etc), cakes & traditional sweets, puddings, cookies, biscuits, Malaysian kuih using coconut milk (santan)/deep fried, all processed and canned foods such as condensed milk, etc.

Whatever our situation, fasting or not we should eat frequently in small portions.

The temptation to eat is very strong during Ramadhan so take it easy!!!

Benefits of Fasting

Not many scientific evidence out there available to support the health benefits of fasting, simply because there were not many studies conducted in the past on fasting.

However, the interest on fasting is growing among nutrition professionals in promoting healthy eating and lifestyles. Fasting is in fact a natural and cheaper way of detoxification. I want to share with you an interesting article about fasting written by Ron Lagerquist, the author of Fasting To Freedom. There are several ways of fasting available but our way during Ramadhan share these benefits too. Enjoy reading and learn about the benefits of fasting!!!

Below is an article written by Ron Lagerquist, the author of Fasting To Freedom.

Speaking at lectures on fasting and nutrition, I have had numerous people come up afterward and passionately state, oh no, you see I tried fasting years ago and it was awful. I will never do that again! They go on to describe headaches, shakes, and weakness, experienced after only a few hours of missing a meal. It was clear by looking at their well-rounded bodies they had made it a solemn duty to never go long between meals. Hunger meant pain. No amount of words could persuade them that their negative experience had nothing to do with starvation and everything to do with detoxifying years of unhealthy eating. Horror filled their faces when I accounted joyously going weeks without solid food. Weeks without food?

Our body has a brief opportunity to cleanse while we sleep, a mini-fast. With great patience, it waits until we start dozing off then finally in the sleep-state it can begin the miraculous work of cleansing. Breakfast is appropriately named, breaking the nightly fast with a morning meal. Upon awakening, the tongue is coated, breath foul, skin puffy and mind foggy. These are early symptoms of detoxification, short little holidays taken every night from a life of feasting.

The negative experience in the first few days of a fast is detoxification a lifetime of toxins stored up in fatty tissue, crammed into the body, meal after meal. During a fast, countless toxins dramatically enter into the bloodstream at a rapid rate. This may be the body's first chance to detoxify. Our unhealthy lifestyle does not lend itself to a friendly introduction of fasting's true character.

The math is simple. When intake of calories is greater than burned, the results will be stored body fat. It is the same with toxins. When intake of toxins is greater than removed, the results will be toxic overload. If you are overweight this is a pretty good sign you are carrying around a storehouse of toxins, affecting normal cell functions. What happens if the toxic-load is greater than the internal-caretaker can remove? Sickness, weakened immune system and premature death, the plagues of our modern lifestyle.

Eliminated during the detoxification process
Ø Dead, dying or diseased cells
Ø Unwanted fatty tissue
Ø Trans-fatty acids
Ø Hardened coating of mucus on the intestinal wall
Ø Toxic waste matter in the lymphatic system and bloodstream
Ø Toxins in the spleen, liver, and kidneys
Ø Mucus from the lungs and sinuses
Ø Embedded toxins in the cellular fibers and deeper organ tissues
Ø Deposits in the microscopic tubes responsible for nourishing brain cells
Ø Excess cholesterol

The Result
Ø Mental clarity is improved
Ø Rapid, after weight loss is achieved without flabbiness
Ø The nervous system is balanced
Ø Energy level is increased
Ø Organs are revitalized
Ø Cellular biochemistry is harmonized
Ø The skin becomes silky, soft, and sensitive
Ø There is greater ease of movement
Ø Breathing becomes fuller, freer and deeper
Ø The digestive system is given a well-deserved rest

People testify that after making changes toward better eating, fasting becomes easier. You could say fasting is a measure of lifestyle.

Married and a mother of three wonderful children.
I have a great passion for cooking. Everybody like to eat!! I have to admit even for myself I like to eat. But at the same time we have the issues to maintain, lose or gain weight. Most important we have to look after ourselves not to get sick.

With the polluted air that we live in, with the lifestyles that we are forced into, with the chemicals that people put in our food during processing, with the stress and depression due to the economy, with the growth of fast food industries, etc etc........more than enough reasons for us to start to act to take control of our lives. Diseases such as diabetes, cancer, stroke and heart disease are the major killers nowadays.

I had lost my father from stroke in 2007, then my auntie from cancer. Early of July 2010 an old friend SMS me saying she's in Guangzhou, China. I was so excited to hear from her again and I assumed she was on a holiday. But the excitement fading when she text me again saying she's there for her breast cancer treatment. And she said Guangzhou is the best place for cancer treatment.

It could be me and you in the near future if we don't take necessary measures!!

This is a place for me to share with everybody regardless whether I know you or not. I have the knowledge and the experience why not put to a good use.
